John Barnes Chance begann seine musikalische Ausbildung im Alter von 9 Jahren, in Form eines Klavierunterrichts bei Jewell Harned. Mit dem Kompositionsstudium fing er dann im Alter von 15 Jahren an und machte seine "Bachelor and Master of Music degrees" an der "University of Texas". Vor allem Kent Kennan und Clifton Williams lehrten ihm die Kunst der Komposition. Chance trat mit "Austin Symphony" als Timpanist auf und war weiters Arrangeur für die 4. und 8. "United States Army Band". Weiters komponierte er von 1960-1962 in Greensboro, North Carolina unter der Schirmherrschaft der "Ford Foundation Young Composers Project". Von Herbst 1966 bis zu seinem frühen Tod war er an der "University of Kentucky" Kompositionsprofessor und wurde dann 1971 zum Leiter der Theorie und Komposition ernannt. Er gewann 1966 den "American Bandmasters Association Ostwals Award" für sein Werk "Variations on a Korean Folk Song".

John Barnes Chance began his form musical training at age 9, studying piano with Jewell Harned. He began studying composition at 15 and received both his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the University of Texas. Chance's primary composition teachers were Kent Kennan and Clifton Williams. He performed as timpanist with the Austin Symphony and was an arranger for the Fourth and Eighth United States Army Bands. Chance was a composer-in-residence at Greensboro, North Carolina, from 1960-1962, under the auspices of the Ford Foundation Young Composers Project. From Fall 1966 until his early death, he was professor of composition at the University of Kentucky and was made head of theory and Composition in 1971. Chance won the American Bandmasters Association Ostwald Award in 1966 for "Variations on a Korean Folk Song".
