H. Owen Reed wurde im Jahre 1975 mit dem "Neil A. Kjos Memorial Award" für sein Werk "For the Unfortunate" ausgezeichnet. Er schrieb zahlreiche Textbücher und seine bekannteste Komposition ist "La Fiesta Mexicana", eine Suite für Band, die er auch für Orchester arrangierte. Er absolvierte seine musikalische Ausbildung an der "Louisiana State University" und an der "Eastman School of Music".

He earned a Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, and A.B. degrees from Louisiana State University. He taught at the University of Michigan from 1939 to 1976 and wrote several books on theory and composition. In 1948-49, he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for study and composing in Mexico. He was a member of ASCAP and the Music Teachers National Association.
