Rich Thompson ist auf freischaffender Basis von Rochester und New York City aus tätig. Nachdem er 1984 das "Masterdegree" an der "Eastman School of Music" gemacht hat, tourte Rich 1985 mit dem Glenn Miller Orchester durch Japan und die USA. Ihm wurden bereits 2 "NEA grants" für die Jazzstudies verliehen. Zahlreiche Gastauftritte hatte er auch in den High Schools und Colleges der USA, Frankreich und Canada. Er trat dort als Aufführender, Vortragender und Jurymitglied auf. Er führte 8 Jahre an der "Eastman School of Music" die Jazz Workshops durch. Rich hat auch in den USA und Frankreich mit renommierten Pianisten wie Bill Dobbins und James Williams Aufnahmen getätigt. Die CD mit diesen Künstlern ist mit dem Titel "Eventually" erschienen. In den letzten Jahren hatte er auch zahlreiche Auftritte mit dem Pianisten Marian McPartland, mit dem Gitarristen Gene Bertoncini, der Trompetenlegende Dizzy Gillespie, sowie der Gitarrenlegende Joe Pass und dem großen Trompeten- und Flügelhornspieler Clark Terry. Er ist zusätzlich auch noch mit dem Rochester Philharmonic Pops Orchestra unterwegs.

Rich Thompson freelances out of Rochester and New York City. After receiving a masters degree from the Eastman School of Music in May 1984, Rich toured Japan and the U.S. in 1985 with the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Awarded the NEA grants for jazz study, Rich was also one of 15 semi-finalists in the 1992 Thelonius Monk International Drum Competition, authored a transcription article in the "Pro Session" column of DownBeat magazine in November 1991, and has made numerous guest appearances at high schools and colleges in the U.S., France and Canada as a performer, clinician and adjudicator. His teaching experience includes eight years at the Eastman School of Music summer jazz workshop and three years as an artist-in-residence at the Birch Creek Music Center in Egg Harbor, Wisconsin, where he received the Woody Herman award for inspirational teaching. Rich has recorded many times in the U.S. and France with renowned pianists Bill Dobbin and James Williams on the CD entitled eventually. In the last couple of years he has also played with pianist Marian McPartland, guitarist Gene Bertoncini, trumpet legend Dizzy Gillespie, guitar legend Joe Pass, and trumpet/flugelhorn great Clark Terry. In addition he currently performs with the Rochester Philharmonic Pops Orchestra.
