Born in 1958, Colin took an early interest in music, starting piano lessons at the age of 6 years. His passion for brass bands was ignited in 1969 when he attended Raans School in Amersham and soon became engrossed in brass playing under the watchful eye of Salvationist Lou Tiederman. During this time he became a member of the Wycombe Youth Band on E Flat Bass. His schooling continued at Exmouth Community College, and he joined the church choir of Holy Trinity Church, Exmouth where he studied under organist and choirmaster Hope Bardrick, and gained Grade VIII in Theory of Music at the tender age of 13 years. At Exeter College he studied the trumpet and percussion, and obtained an A Level in Music in 1976.
Playing Tenor Horn with the Lympstone Band in his youth, Colin joined the police service in 1981, and spent 16 years as a member of the Band of the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary, under Keith Whittall – who had been his trumpet tutor at Exeter College - and was a founder member and Principle Percussionist of the British Police Symphony Orchestra in 1989. With the BPSO he has toured all over Great Britain, and as far a field as Paris and Jersey, including his first performance at the Royal Albert Hall.
Returning to his love for brass bands, in 1996 Colin again joined the Lympstone Band, (now the Lympstone South West Telecoms Band) and soon took over the post of Soprano Cornet. In the space of a few years, under baton of his great friend Charlie Fleming, this band became almost unbeatable on the contest platform, winning 9 contests in a row, and being promoted to the 2nd Section, where it remains to this day.
After a suggestion from Charlie Fleming, in 1998 Colin underwent training to be a Drum Major for the Royal Navy Volunteer Band movement under the wing of the now Corps Drum Major of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Band Service ‘Wiggy’ Whitwham. In 2000 Colin won the award for Best Drum Major with Devonport Naval Base Volunteer Band (HMS Drake) at the annual festival in Portsmouth, following this in 2003 when he won the award for Best Solo Instrumentalist, playing Soprano Cornet.
Leaving the Lympstone Band in 2003, Colin joined Torbay Brass on Soprano cornet, but due to unforeseen medical circumstances, has not been able to play cornet since March of 2004, and is currently back at playing BB flat bass with Lympstone South West Telecoms Band.
Regularly playing with many local bands, Colin has been a familiar and popular sight on the concert stage, and one chance performance with the City of Exeter Railway Band early in 2004 resulted in him being appointed as their Musical Director in June 2004.
Coupled with his studies on the Accrington & Rossendale BA (Hons) Band Studies course where he studies conducting and composition under Arthur Butterworth, David Golightly and Richard Evans, and arrangement with Alan Fernie, Colin says that this new era of his career is the most rewarding and challenging he has ever undertaken, and he looks forward to promoting the fortunes of the City of Exeter Railway Band for many years to come.
