Alexander Comitas studierte Klavier bei Thom Bollen und Komposition bei Hans Kox am Konservatorium in Utrecht. Danach folgten Studien im Orchesterdirigat bei Anton Kersjes am Maastrichter Konservatorium. Von 1951 bis 1990 arbeitete er als freischaffender Pianist, hauptsächlich für die Orchester und den Chor des Holländischen Rundfunks. Später fiel seine Entscheidung, sich gänzlich der Komposition zu widmen. Seit 1981 arbeitete Comitas hauptsächlich an Auftragskompositionen. 1988 komponierte er die Konzertouverture "Mithra" - später für Blasorchester bearbeitet und umbenannt in "Caucasian Epode" - aus Anlaß der Eröffnung einer neuen Konzerthalle in Enschede. Die Kantate "The Wedding of the Moon and Sun" (1992) zum Text des britischen Dichters und Bühnenautors Ian Burten wurde zur Eröffnung des "Frits Philips Music Centre" in Eindhoven geschrieben. Für die "Eureka!"-Konferenz der europäischen Minister in Rotterdam 1991 schrieb er die Fantasieouverture "Eureka!". Bis heute hat Comitas zwei Sinfonien geschrieben, beide komponierte er im Auftrag der Niederländischen Rundfunkanstalt NCRV. Die erste, "From Etty Hillesum's Diary", wurde auf CD veröffentlicht. Seit 1994 unterrichtet er Komposition am Konservatorium in Utrecht.

Alexander Comitas, born 1957, studied piano with Thom Bollen and composition with Hans Kox at the Utrecht Conservatory, followed by lessons in orchestral conducting with Anton Kersjes at the Maastricht Conservatory. From 1981 until 1990 he worked as a free lance pianist, mainly for the orchestras and choir of the Dutch radio. Then he decided to devote himself entirely to composing. Since 1981 Comitas composes mainly in commission. In 1988 he wrote the Concert Overture "Mithra" - (later reworked for wind orchestra and renamed "Caucasian Epode") - on the occasion of the opening of a new concert hall in Enschede. The cantate "The Wedding of the Moon and Sun" (1992), to words of the British poet and playwright Ian Burton, was written for the opening season of the "Frits Philips Music Centre" in Eindhoven. For the Eureka! Conference of European ministers in Rotterdam (1991) he wrote the Fantasy Overture "Eureka!". To date Comitas has written two symphonies, both commissioned by the Dutch broadcasting company NCRV. The first one, subtitled "From Etty Hillesum's Diary" was released on CD. The second one, for soloists, chorus and orchestra, is subtitled "From the Song of Songs". In 1994 Comitas became a teacher of composition at the Utrecht Conservatory.
